Growing up working for a family-run wholesale and distribution company, Jay learned the importance of prudent financial management from a young age. “My father taught me the importance of having cash and little debt,” states Jay. “He had one simple rule, ‘never spend more than you earn.’” Jay observed the company’s performance through strong and downward economic times, and saw that when the economy slumped, the family-run company far outshined its competitors. “We believed in resiliency over short-term performance. We focused on increasing our odds of long-term survival during bad times, rather than chasing excess returns during good times.”
Jay’s passion for long-term financial performance and affinity for client-service made him well-suited for his move into the asset management field. Before coming to Compass, Jay worked as a consultant at Bank of America Merrill Lynch helping to select money managers for client portfolios.
Longing to select the best stocks and bonds first-hand for his clients, Jay joined the Compass Capital team in 2009. As a portfolio manager at Compass, Jay enjoys working directly with clients to identify their financial goals, risk tolerance, and many other considerations involved in constructing an appropriate portfolio. Jay notes the Compass team’s passion, alignment with client values, and engagement with the companies they’re purchasing to be true differentiators in the industry. “We excel at identifying well-run, family-like companies with low debt and strong cash flows that will reap stable returns for our clients.”
Outside the financial realm, Jay is an avid tennis fan who had the pleasure of watching his two sons win the Minnesota state high school doubles championship. Jay also enjoys fishing and hiking the rugged terrain of Colorado with his wife.
